This is a beauty! The fenced in area below the house in the centre of the picture is the public "well". It was actually a trough that was filled by a spring that flows through the garden of the house behind (presumably with an overflow to the beck). The spring can be seen and heard to this day although the "well" has been covered over.

The minutes of the Parish Council show that a pump was erected here in 1896. There is no sign of the pump within the fenced area in this photo so it must have been taken before then.

Notice the lad with a pail on his way to the well. He appears again on No. 1 in this section which must have been taken at the same time.
