Bishop Wilton, Past and Present

History on the Ground

Introduction

This section is intentionally named after the book of the same name by the late Maurice Beresford. His work provides the local historian with the inspiration and motivation to scour familiar local terrain for features that can be given an historical interpretation.

The main idea here is to provide a present-day photograph of a feature in the landscape from the parish of Bishop Wilton and explain its historical significance based on facts - or even conjecture.

A summary of all the immediately identifiable Sites of Historic Interest in the area is also provided by way of an overview, along with a map that allows them to be pinpointed.

Features in the Landscape

The Damming of the Mill Pond - at the East end of the village, as the land rises towards the Wolds, there is a sloping spit of land that looks as though it could be a natural formation. But is it?

An Aerial Photograph of the Wolds - the value of a view of a portion of the Yorkshire Wolds from the air is explored, ranging from prehistory to more recent times.
